Yellowstone Webcams

Yellowstone National Park has a collection of webcams that show views in and around Mammoth Hot Springs, Mount Washburn, Old Faithful Geyser and the Upper Geyser Basin. We sometimes experience problems with the webcams. Know that when a webcam goes offline or experiences a disruption in service or image quality, we are working to fix the problem.   Old Faithful

  The Upper Geyser Basin of Yellowstone National Park is one of the most unique and dynamic places on planet earth. Here is the largest concentration of geysers in the world. Over half of Yellowstone’s 300 active geysers are located here, including Old Faithful.
  
  This view of the Old Faithful Geyser is captured from a webcam inside the visitor education center. Staff post predictions for the next Old Faithful Geyser eruption on this page. Predictions resume when the Visitor center staff return in late April.

  Upper Geyser Basin

  Old Faithful, named by members of the 1870 Washburn Expedition, was once called “Eternity’s Timepiece” because of the regularity of its eruptions. However, despite the myth, this geyser has never erupted at exact hourly intervals, nor is it the largest or most regular geyser in Yellowstone. However, it does erupt more frequently than any other of the large geysers.

  Mammoth Hot Springs - Travertine Terraces

  Yellowstone is a place of change, and this view highlights a place where change is constant and evident, the travertine terraces. The terraces are formed when water rises through limestone carrying high amounts of dissolved calcium carbonate. At the surface, carbon dioxide is released and the calcium carbonate is deposited, forming travertine, the chalky white rock of the terraces. Due to the rapid rate of deposition, these features are always changing.

  Mammoth Hot Springs - Parade Ground

  When the Army was based in Fort Yellowstone, soldiers used the area you see here for a parade ground and soldier drills. It was barren and sandy until 1895 when Captain Anderson brought in topsoil and attempted to plant grass. Thanks to a watering system engineered by Army engineer Chittenden, the efforts were a success and green grass replaced dusty sand. Today, elk and bison now graze where soldiers once stood and you may notice them from time to time.

  Mount Washburn Fire Lookout - Northeast

  Mount Washburn is one of three fire lookouts and the only one that has been staffed in recent years. This webcam captures a birds-eye view of the park and in the summer can be directed by the fire lookout who dedicates their time waiting, watching, and wondering if that storm in the distance will ignite a fire.
  
  Our radio staff were up on Mount Washburn recently and were able to reset this webcam which had been down for a couple of months due to a power surge.

  Mount Washburn Fire Lookout - Southwest

  At the top of Dunraven pass at an elevation of 10,243 feet is Mount Washburn. The views are spectacular. It is a six-mile hike round trip to the top of Mount Washburn and back. A fire lookout is stationed at the top of Washburn and uses this camera to track fires during the summer season. When it is not being used to track fires the webcam is usually pointed in a southern direction with a view of the ridgeline of Mount Washburn in the foreground, and the Grand Tetons, portions of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone and Yellowstone Lake in the upper left hand corner and background.
  
  Thanks to our radio staff for making a recent trip up there and turning the webcams back on after a power surge shut them down.
