Yellowstone Transportation Scholar Selected

Yellowstone National Park is pleased to announce that Katrina Hecimovic has been selected as Transportation Scholar to assist in the forthcoming redesign of the park's historic, year-round North Entrance in Gardiner, Montana, known as the Gardiner Gateway Project.

Hecimovic, a University of Massachusetts-Amherst civil engineering graduate, was chosen as part of the National Park Foundation's 2012 Transportation Scholars program, which assigns a handful of talented young men and women to devote a year of research and development work toward improving transportation issues in America's national parks.

Hecimovic will assist park and community planning officials in developing a wide range of proposed infrastructure improvements at the North Entrance including traffic congestion and pollution, parking, pedestrian access and other public amenities.

The Gardiner Gateway Project is the result of a joint effort between the National Park Service (NPS) and 15 federal, state, local, and non-profit groups to improve traffic circulation and enhance visitor safety along the route, while increasing economic opportunities for the community of Gardiner and Park County, Montana. Funding sources are currently being sought by respective groups, with the goal of portions of the project to be completed by the NPS' 100th anniversary in 2016.

For more information on the Gardiner Gateway Project, visit http://gardinergatewayproject.org/. To learn more about the Transportation Scholar and other National Park Foundation programs, visit www.nationalparks.org.

As the only national charitable partner to the National Park Service, the National Park Foundation connects Americans with their nearly 400 national parks to ensure they are preserved for generations to come.
