Stone Fire Information
Started: 16 August / Out:
UTMs: 556 x 493
The Stone Fire, started by lightning, was reported on August 16. This fire is located northeast of Fishing Bridge. The fire is approximately 6 acres and is burning actively in old growth forests and spotting into old burns (1981 and 1996). The fire is being closely monitored throughout the day. Smoke and fire activity can be seen from the highway from Fishing Bridge to East Entrance.
Update 18 Sep - Tue
There were no smokes seen on the Stone fire. The fire size remains at 130 acres.
Update 05 Sep - Wed
Three smokes were observed in the northeast corned of the fire in the old 1981 burn, and one small smoke puffed up on occasion on the west flank. The fire remains at 130 acres.
Update 03 Sep - Mon
Very little change from yesterday. The fire was mapped today at 130 acres. The fire has been creeping and smoldering to the northeast and west.
Update 30 Aug - Thu
Little activity was observed today. Two light smokes were observed on the west flank, and one larger smoke was seen on the northeast flank in the old 1981 burn. No flames were visible from the air on any of the smokes. The fire is mapped at 116 acres.
Update 28 Aug - Tue
Minimal activity was observed today. Flame on the ground was observed on the southwest and east flanks, but little in the way of fire spread occurred. One spot developed from yesterday’s activity to the northeast of the main body of the fire in the old 1981 burn.
Update 27 Aug - Mon
Isolated torching and spotting again occurred on the south, west, and southeast flanks. Short duration ground runs were observed in the old 1981 burn, and similar fire behavior can be expected as herbaceous fuels continue to cure. Fire will continue to back to the west as well as spot into unburned tree islands to the east. The fire is mapped at 114 acres.
Update - 26 Aug - Sun
Continued torching and spotting activity on the west, south, and southeast flanks resulted in the burning out of unburned tree islands and some movement to the east. Some burning in the sedge bottoms adjacent to the tree islands was observed, but only when preheated by adjacent burning tree stands. Fire was mapped at 84 acres
Update - 25 Aug - Sat
Isolated torching and subsequent fire spread was observed on the west, south and southeast flanks. Heavier fuels continue to hold lots of heat. Ground monitors reported that the sedges and grasses are beginning to carry fire on the ground after being pre-heated. The fire was mapped at 70 acres and is being managed for resource benefit.
Update - 24 Aug - Fri
Isolated torching was observed as the fire moved slowly westward. Progress to the north is hindered by a 3200-acre burn in 1981. The fire was manned by four monitors, with five more to join them tomorrow. Mapped at 32 acres and is being managed for resource benefits.
