The National Capital Region (NCR), headquartered in Washington, DC, administers the National Mall and monumental core parks that were established at the same time the Nation's Capital was founded in the period 1790-1792. This oldest collection of national park areas, along with dozens of historic sites, natural areas, and Civil War battlefields comprise today's National Capital Region of the National Park Service.

The Freedom Wall is comprised of 4,048 gold stars. Each gold star represents one hundred American service personnel who died or remain missing in the war.  The 405,399 American dead and missing from the Second World War are second only to the loss of more than 620,000 Americans during our Civil War.
