A Backcountry Volunteeer Project
Eighty people from Arizona and around the world came together in November 2008, to help us replace old fencing in a remote corner of Wupatki National Monument. The Back Country Horsemen of America, Central Arizona Chapter, brought 55 horses and mules to pack in the fencing materials. Working with National Park Service and US Forest Service employees and young volunteers from American Conservation Experience, Northern Arizona University, and the Student Wildlife Society, they moved more than 12,000 pounds of wire, fence posts, concrete, and water over miles of rough terrain.  We couldn't have done it without them!  For a full account of this experience, click here.

Did You Know?
Arizona has more fairy shrimp than any other state except California. Three species of fairy shrimp, a single tadpole shrimp species, and a single clam shrimp species are found in the ephemeral pools and prehistoric impoundments at Wupatki National Monument.
