Though the Wright brothers were from Dayton, OH and did much of their inventing and research there, it was the Outer Banks that met their criteria for privacy, steady winds, and wide-open non-vegetated spaces. It was here, in this sparsely populated area known at the time as Kitty Hawk with its massive dunes that they setup camp so as to have the freedom to experiment with and perfect their machines until they achieved success.

Did You Know?
John Daniels, who was employed at the Kill Devils Hills Life-Saving Station in North Carolina was asked to take the now famous photograph of the first flight. Daniels had never operated a camera until the morning of the flight.
