Though the Wright brothers were from Dayton, OH and did much of their inventing and research there, it was the Outer Banks that met their criteria for privacy, steady winds, and wide-open non-vegetated spaces. It was here, in this sparsely populated area known at the time as Kitty Hawk with its massive dunes that they setup camp so as to have the freedom to experiment with and perfect their machines until they achieved success.
Did You Know?
Although the town of Kitty Hawk is always associated with the exploits of the Wright brothers, most of their flying experiments took place about 4 miles to the south on the sands of Kill Devil Hills. The town of Kill Devil Hills, where the memorial is located, was incorporated in 1953.
