Student Employment Opportunities

The government has a program designed to hire students into Federal positions without the process of applying under vacancy announcements on www.usajobs.com. This program is called the Student Temporary Employment Program (STEP).

What does it mean to be a "student"?
A student is defined as: An individual who is enrolled or accepted for enrollment as a degree (diploma, certificate, etc.) seeking student and is taking at least a half-time academic/vocational/technical course load in an accredited high school, technical or vocational school, 2 or 4 years college or university, graduate or professional school. Half-time is determined by the school in which the student is enrolled. Students must submit a letter from the school verifying status (at least 1/2 time) in a degree program, provide original transcripts, and must maintain a 2.0 grade point average.

What jobs are available for students?
Click here to download the quick sheet of jobs available for students.

How do I apply for a job using the STEP program?
Students must submit a Federal resume - which is slightly different than a regular resume. Federal resumes need to include more information than is normally found on a one page resume, so include the following items and remember that it's ok for your Federal resume to be more than one page.

Include the following on your Federal resume:
- Title of the position or positions that you are interested in from the quick sheet.
- Contact information: name, address, phone number, e-mail
- Are you a citizen of the United States? (please note that you must be a US citizen to apply for a Federal job)
- Education
- Work and/or volunteer experience: include salary, hours worked per week, and specific dates worked/volunteered (Example: June 1, 2007 - July 31, 2007; 40 hours per week. DO NOT write: June - July 2007 as this is not enough information.)

What if I don't have enough work/volunteer experience to qualify for a job?
If you are interested in gaining experience, you may want to apply for one of the park's volunteer opportunities or if you are 15-18 years old, click here to learn about youth employment.

How can I learn more about job opportunities for students?
Visit one of the park's Job Fairs or call the Summer Jobs Hotline at (703) 255-1823.
