Ferret Population Growing at Wind Cave National Park
A year after the reintroduction of black-footed ferrets into Wind Cave National Park, the program is showing signs of success. Fourteen kits, baby ferrets, were trapped and released in the park’s primary reintroduction areas last week during four nights of surveying.

Depending on fuel and weather conditions, park management plans to conduct a 93-acre prescribed fire this fall. The project area surrounds the Elk Mountain Campground, and it could be burned as early as this weekend.

This project has been delayed.  Highway 87 will close in early April. S.D. Highway 87 in Wind Cave National Park will close for upwards of five weeks beginning March 5 while contractors work on the Pigtail Bridge.  The road will be closed from the junction of Highway 385 and Highway 87 to the Rankin Ridge Fire Tower access road.
