Taking a Blood Sample for Genetic Testing

In 1999, a three-year bison genetics study was initiated through the Biological Resources Division of the US Geological Survey and Texas A&M. Five parks are included in this study in which mitochondrial and nuclear DNA will be analyzed to help determine genetic health and makeup of the herd. To date, 293 blood and tail-hair samples from the Wind Cave herd have been sent to Texas A&M for analysis.
