The Elk Mountain Campground is closed and will remain closed through the summer of 2013 due to across the board budget cuts.

Taking a Blood Sample for Genetic Testing NPS Photo In 1999, a three-year bison genetics study was initiated through the Biological Resources Division of the US Geological Survey and Texas A&M. Five parks are included in this study in which mitochondrial and nuclear DNA will be analyzed to help determine genetic health and makeup of the herd. To date, 293 blood and tail-hair samples from the Wind Cave herd have been sent to Texas A&M for analysis. |
