Wind Cave National Park
Abstract - Ages of Ponderosa Pine in Relation to Presumed Fire History in Wind Cave National Park

Fritz, Randall J. 1982. Ages of Ponderosa Pine in Relation to Presumed Fire History in Wind Cave National Park. 5 p.

Abstract

I cored several ponderosa pine trees in Wind Cave National Park to investigate the hypothesis that older individuals grow primarily in areas which have been relatively protected from wild fires. Such areas include rocky ridgetops and moist ravines.

Natural Entrance of Wind Cave

Did You Know?
Winds caused by changes in barometric pressure are what give Wind Cave its name. These winds have been measured at the cave's walk-in entrance at over 70 mph. The winds at the natural entrance of the cave attracted the attention of Native Americans and early settlers.
