Wind Cave Trip Reports 2012

Wind Cave Happenings, January-April 2012

From January through April of 2012, 46 caving trips were taken into off-trail portions of Wind Cave; including 22 trips to the Historic Section, 7 trips to the Colorado Grotto Section, 5 trips to the Lakes Section, 4 trips to the North Section, 2 trips to the Half Mile Hall Section, and 1 trip each to the Southern Comfort and Club Room Sections. During 28 survey and inventory trips, cavers surveyed a total of 4,668 feet or 0.88 miles of previously unsurveyed passage, with an average survey length of 168 feet per trip. During 15 resurvey trips, 3,510 feet or 0.66 miles of problem surveys were also resurveyed, with an average survey length of 234 feet per trip. The new survey raised the length of the Wind Cave survey from 137.86 to 138.74 miles.

Matthew led a survey trip to the KC survey in the Colorado Grotto Section. They surveyed a grabby crawlway for 84 feet and left a lead for a future trip.

Marc led a resurvey trip to the PZ survey in the Club Room Section where he resurveyed 128 feet and fixed a bad loop closure problem.

Rod Horrocks and Don Anderson 1/10/2012
Rod led a resurvey trip to the IZ survey in the Historic Section. They resurveyed 90 feet of the IZ before tying into the Chert Room on the Fairgrounds Tour Route. They then surveyed some side passages for 77 feet.

Wind Cave Weekend1/14/2012

Rod Horrocks and Ken Geu
Rod led a resurvey trip to the IZ survey in the Historic Section to train Ken Geu to sketch. They resurveyed 163 feet (from IZ11-19) and then 194 feet of side passages. Rod discovered the first crinoid stems found in the bedrock in Wind Cave, which they photo-documented.

Marc led a resurvey trip to the NX survey in the Historic Section. They resurveyed 393 feet of the NX survey and surveyed a few domes for an additional 170 feet.

Rod led a work trip to the W.C.T.U. Hall in the Historic Section to start Everett on his Senior Geology Project for South Dakota School of Mines and Technology. Everett's project was the first SDSM&T Senior Geology Project in Wind Cave since the late 1950's. Everett characterized the cobbles found underneath Silent Lake.

Matthew led a survey trip to the KC survey in the Colorado Grotto Section. The tight crawlway they were surveying kept going after appearing to end a couple of times and eventually connected to the AD survey. The surveyed 172 feet and left a few leads for a future trip.

Rod led a survey trip to the LF survey in the Historic Section. After finishing the lead in the Cobble Maze area left from their previous trip, they went to the Monte Cristos Palace area off of the Fairgrounds Tour Route and started surveying side leads. They surveyed 183 feet and left a couple of fissure leads for a future trip.

Matthew led a resurvey trip to the AD survey in the Colorado Grotto Section. They resurveyed 129 feet and added 45 feet of new survey.

Roger Harris, Dave Schmitz, Kevin Manley, & Robyn Bathurst
Roger led a resurvey trip to the UQ survey in the Historic Section. He resurveyed 73 feet and added 126 feet of new survey. He left several leads for a return trip.

Rod Horrocks, Adam Johnson, & Aaron Mullins 3/13/2012
Rod led some Wyoming cavers on a survey trip to the NM survey in the Historic Section. They started by mopping up several leads just off of the Natural Entrance Tour Route that Rod had been passing for the previous 13 years. They mapped 123 feet in this area before they moved down the MN survey, surveying side passages as they went until they got to their main target, some leads at NM10. These opened into a wide, low crawl where Rod had a large boulder roll on him as he crawled across it. Because he had dreamed that exact scenario two days previous, they named the area Dreamscape. They surveyed a total of 424 feet for the day and left several leads for a future trip.

Marc led a resurvey trip to the UX survey in the Historic Section. They surveyed 58 feet before they realized that the remainder of the UX survey was redundant survey, so Marc called the trip and later deleted that portion of the survey from the Wind Cave survey.

Carl led a survey trip to the LTE survey in the Southern Comfort Section. After placing a charcoal dye packet at the Pile Up water collector, they surveyed a complex area north of the Other Side breakdown. They surveyed 288 feet and left leads for a future trip.

Wind Cave Happenings, May-August 2012

From May through August of 2012, 56 caving trips were taken into off-trail portions of Wind Cave; including 43 trips to the Historic Section, 7 trips to the Club Room Section, 3 trips to the Lakes Section, 2 trips to the Half Mile Hall Section, and 1 trip to the North Section. During 16 survey and inventory trips, cavers surveyed a total of 3,624 feet or 0.69 miles of previously unsurveyed passage, with an average survey length of 226 feet per trip. During 18 resurvey trips, 1,811 feet or 0.34 miles of problem surveys were also resurveyed, with an average survey length of 100 feet per trip. In addition, 10 training trips were taken on the Wild Cave Tour Route, six recreation and orientation trips were taken on the Bishop Fowler Loop, and one recreation trip was taken on the Club Room Route. The new survey raised the length of the Wind Cave survey from 138.19 to 138.88 miles.

Wind Cave Happenings, September-December 2012

From September through December of 2012, 32 caving trips were taken into off-trail portions of Wind Cave; including 17 trips to the Historic Section, 5 trips to the Club Room Section, 4 trips to the Lakes Section, 2 trips to the North Section, 2 trip to the Half Mile Hall Section, and 2 trips to the Colorado Grotto Section. During 25 survey and inventory trips, cavers surveyed a total of 5,177 feet or 0.98 miles of previously unsurveyed passage, with an average survey length of 358 feet per trip. During 15 resurvey trips, 3,775 feet or 0.71 miles of problem surveys were resurveyed, with an average survey length of 251 feet per trip. The new survey increased the length of the Wind Cave survey from 138.88 to 139.86 miles.

Derek led a survey trip to survey leads to the west of the Chimera Room in the North Section. They named an area with spectacular frostwork the Blizzard of Awes while surveying 710 feet. They found one long canyon passage that reconnected to know cave but wasn't shown as a lead at either end on the map.

Rod led a resurvey trip to the BF survey in the Historic Section. They resurveyed 152 and named the main passage Sugar Run after all of the druzy quartz crystals covering everything.

Rod led a survey trip to the AT survey in the Historic Section. They named a round room the Grain Bin. They pushed a crawl and then a passage on the edge of the cave for a couple of shots before leaving that tight lead for some very tiny future cavers. They surveyed 142 feet of new survey in addition to completing 23 feet of resurvey.

Rod led a resurvey trip to the BF survey in the Historic Section. They resurveyed 130 feet and adding 367 feet of new survey in the Sugar Run area. Pushing a bellycrawl, they found a large walking passage they named the Teaser, after it ended after a few shots. They also found an Alvin and Roy McDonald signature dated 9/23/1893, which is not long before Alvin's death. Surveying through a constriction that had been dug open by Alvin just beyond the signatures, they surveyed up to a couple of holes ringed with moonmilk that were located on the edge of the cave at that level. They could see into a larger room beyond the impassable holes.

They surveyed 351 feet in a passage they named Wilson Way after Jim Wilson, a long-time Wind Cave caver from Colorado that had recently passed away. They used a hand-line to climb down a pit and enter a north-trending passage at the bottom of the pit. They left the south-trending passage as a lead for a future trip.

Rod led a survey trip to the MY survey off the Attic in the Historic Section. They surveyed 645 feet and named a large round room the Great Flush. By moving a rock along the Candlelight Tour Route in the Chamber de Norcutt they rediscovered an area that had been lost since the 1890's, which they named Tobacco Flats and the Lost Fissure. They left several leads in the area for a future trip.
