NPS Photo by D.A. Buehler
The Figure 8 Room was discovered by Andy Flurkey, Chris Hill, and Bob Reinstatler on August 1, 1971. The outline of this major intersection in Half-Mile Hall resembles a large "8", giving the room its name. This is the second largest known room in the cave.

Winds caused by changes in barometric pressure are what give Wind Cave its name. These winds have been measured at the cave's walk-in entrance at over 70 mph. The winds at the natural entrance of the cave attracted the attention of Native Americans and early settlers.
