Student Internships in Interpretation

Every year, Wind Cave National Park hires Park Guide interns to assist with visitor center operations and giving interpretive programs such as cave tours and wildlife programs. Park Guide internships offer skills for college, a career in the environmental education field and beyond. Experience in interpretation, public speaking, environmental education, or caves is helpful, but not required. Evening, weekend, and holiday work may be required. Duties may include:

  • Researching, developing, and presenting a variety of interpretive programs and cave tours

  • Staffing the visitor center information desk

  • Offering information and orientation services in informal settings such as parking lots and outdoor terraces

  • Assisting with special projects as needed

Seeking Applicants for Summer 2024 Park Guide Internships

If you are interested in joining our team for the summer:

  • Submit an up-to-date resume which clearly states the duties you were responsible for at each job you have listed. Also include a current telephone number for your direct supervisor at each job you have had. Note: Resumes for federal jobs can be several pages long. Include as much detail in yours as possible.

  • Submit your application on or before March 1, 2024 to: Lead Park Ranger, Marvin Achtenberg at marvin_achtenberg@nps.gov. Questions about the position are welcome.

  • Please note: A background investigation will be required for all intern positions.

Internship Benefits and Location

Wind Cave National Park is located in southwest South Dakota and is home to the 7th longest cave in the world. Bison, elk, prairie dogs, birds, and more roam 33,000 acres of mixed-grass prairie and ponderosa pine forest.

All housing is provided by Wind Cave at no cost to the intern. Housing consists of shared, furnished apartments or houses with kitchens and baths located minutes from work. A cost of living allowance and uniforms are provided. Personal transportation is desirable, but not essential.
