Goals: This unit introduces the concept that there is a natural order in the way things occur and in the way they are arranged. It illustrates that patterns assist animals and plants to survive. By observing and understanding patterns in nature, many things can be predicted.
Objectives: After completing this unit the students will:
- define classification.
- list three different classes of animals-reptiles, mammals, amphibians, insects, birds, arachnids, etc.
- compare two classes of animals and explain at least three different characteristics of the classes, for example: between mammals and reptiles or insects and arachnids.
- identify a method that animals use to attract a mate of their own species and analyze its effectiveness.
- identify a cycle, list and organize the stages.
- evaluate ways that designs and forms in the natural world help plants and animals survive.
- list three different types of cave formations.
These objectives will be achieved in three stages:
- Nametags, pre-visit activities and information -teacher(s) will complete Nametag Activity and select at least one Pre-visit Activity to do in the classroom before visiting Wind Cave National Park. Selection of activities will be communicated to the ranger leading the park program.
- Park activities - ranger directed with assistance and supervision of the teacher and/or teacher aide.
- Post-visit activities - teacher(s) will select at least one Post-visit Activity to do in the classroom after visiting Wind Cave National Park.
