A return trip to the new pool on August 29 found that the pool had risen 1 foot! If it continues at this rate, it is possible that the route to the Lakes may sump shut within a few months.

The survey total for 1996 was 1.65 miles. 2.1 miles of previously surveyed cave was inventoried in 1996.

Two Wind Cave weekends were canceled in 1996, one due to the Federal Government shut down in January and another due to a conflict with the National Speleological Society Convention in August. Although the volume of survey and inventory has slowed down in the past few years, the overall quality of survey and inventory data is much improved over previous years.
