Schedule of Field Seminars and Workshops

The White Sands Institute field seminars combine a mixture of outdoor field excursions along with classroom presentations. All courses will take place at White Sands National Monument. The field seminars will be taught in small groups, so interested individuals are advised to register as soon as possible before classes fill up.

Ecosystems of the Dunes (FA15-01)
Friday, August 7, 2015, 9am-1pm
Cost: $20
Target Audience: 10th grade to adult
Location: White Sands National Monument
Supplies: Bring your smartphones (or use our devices)

Students will start the morning in the conference room where we'll load an app onto your device. Then hike out to the dunes to take ecological data on the flora and fauna. Once we've gathered our data, we will return to the conference room to pool the data and photos to see our results. We can post them on each of our own social media sites. Then show your contacts what you know about the dunes! Come for fun at White Sands National Monument!

 

Full Moon Qi Gong (FA15-02)
September 28 and October 19 (Mondays), 6pm-7pm
Cost: $40
Target Audience: 10th grade to adult
Location: White Sands National Monument
Supplies: Exercise shoes required

This course will teach the foundational basics of Qi Gong ("energy work") according to the traditional practice, the Eight Pieces of Brocade. Rooted in Chinese medicine and Taoist philosophy, gentle flowing movements coordinated with deep rhythmic breathing form a moving meditation for energy cultivation. By aligning body, breath, and mind, Qi Gong can calm the mind, induce a meditative state, and facilitate healing of body, mind, and emotions. All sessions to be conducted beneath the full moon. (4 sessions)

iSands: Exploring Smart Phone Photography (FA15-04)
Friday, October 9 and Saturday, October 10, 2015
Cost: $75
Target Audience: 10th grade to adult
Location: NMSU-A and White Sands National Monument
Supplies: Bring any smartphone capable of doing panorama, slow motion, time lapse. Have Instagram app installed. Bring plenty of water.

Bring your smartphones and learn basic composition and all functions of smartphone cameras. Learn how to take images using panorama, slow motion, time lapse, post process, and best cropping techniques. Phones must have a camera with these capabilities. Also, please download the Instagram app to your phone before coming to class.
