Construction of temporary museum -- mixing clay for adobe bricks, using the horse (Old Blue) for the "dirty work". Four parts clay, one part straw or hay and enough water to mix, then dumped into a pit two feet deep. Marcus Whitman may have used a similar technique to construct the mission buildings. John Fremont, the explorer, and his wife Jessie Benton Fremont, lived at Fort Mason. Both were abolitionists and their home, once located at the edge of the post, became a center of San Francisco’s intellectual life.
