The gate on South Fork Mountain Lookout Road within Whiskeytown National Recreation Area will be open between August 21, 2010 and October 24, 2010 to accommodate hunters during the archery and general deer seasons. This area is located within California Deer Hunt Zone B-2 and the archery season runs from August 21 through September 12. The general deer season runs from September 18, through October 24.

During the remainder of the year the gate, located just north of Highway 299, is closed but accessible to park visitors who first check in at the Whiskeytown Visitor Center and show proof of a valid driver’s license and vehicle registration.

The gate was first closed in June of 2008 to prohibit international drug trafficking organizations from accessing illegal marijuana cultivation sites that were being supplied from the road. Since the gate closure, no new marijuana cultivation sites have been found on the South Fork Mountain area. For additional information, please call the Chief Ranger’s office at 530-242-3413.
