Whiskeytown National Recreation Area (NRA) park officials today announced the release of the Whiskey Creek Ranger Station Communications Link Environmental Assessment (EA) for public review. To assist the National Park Service with this project, the public is invited to provide comments during the review period from July 10, 2012 to August 8, 2012. The Environmental Assessment may also be downloaded and comments posted directly to the National Park Service Planning, Environment and Public Comment website at:
https://parkplanning.nps.gov/WhiskeyCreekCommunicationsLinkEA. Copies of the document are available for viewing at Park Headquarters, or the Anderson or Redding Branches of the Shasta Public Libraries.

The Whiskey Creek Ranger Station on Whiskey Creek Road is one of two ranger offices within the park. The building has basic telephone service, but due to the remote location of the property, there are no data services available. In order for Park Rangers to utilize secure intranet and internet services this facility must be linked to a communication system capable of providing the bandwidth to handle these services. This EA was drafted to assess the potential environmental impacts to park resources by the proposed action of installing a microwave communications link between Park Headquarters and the Whiskey Creek Ranger Station.

The EA contains an analysis of the impacts of both the proposed action and the no-action alternative. This proposed action consists of the construction of one microwave tower at Park Headquarters and another at the Whiskey Creek Ranger Station. The microwave link would meet the objective of providing high-speed data capabilities to support park ranger operations. This method was determined to be the most practical after consulting with communication equipment and service providers, as well as National Park Service Information Technology specialists.

To provide comments on the EA, or for additional information, please feel free to contact the Whiskeytown National Recreation Area Chief of Resources Management Sean Denniston at 530-242-3445 or write to Whiskeytown NRA, Attn. Whiskey Creek Communications Link EA, P.O. Box 188, Whiskeytown, CA 96095. Comments via email may be addressed to e-mail us. In the subject line, respondents should note that these comments are for the Whiskey Creek Communications Link EA.
