Due to continued extreme dry conditions as a result of the ongoing drought, the National Park Service at Whiskeytown National Recreation Area is implementing fire restrictions at the park. These restrictions will continue in place for the remainder of the summer season, until weather conditions bring precipitation with significant moisture.  These restrictions are in place to prevent a wildland fire from occurring within the park’s boundary.

In compliance with Title 36 Code of Federal Regulations, §2.13 (c), the Superintendent is ordering the following restriction beginning today, June 20, 2014:

1. It is illegal to light or maintain a fire except in designated areas or receptacles and under conditions that may be established by the superintendent (36 CFR §2.13(a)(1)).

Wood or charcoal fires,  stoves and grills are only allowed in designated areas at the following posted and developed picnic and campground locations: Oak Bottom Campground, Oak Bottom Beach picnic area, Sheep Camp, Brandy Creek Campsites 1 and 2, Brandy Creek Marina Picnic Site, Brandy Creek Beach Picnic Sites, Crystal Creek Campgrounds, Clear Creek Picnic Area, Dry Creek Campground, Peltier Campground, Horse Camp, Whiskey Creek Group Picnic Site and Whiskey Creek Boat Launch Picnic Site.

Portable stoves or lanterns using gas or pressurized liquid fuel may be used with caution by backpackers with a valid backcountry use permit.

All fires shall be extinguished upon termination of use and in accordance with such conditions as may be established by the superintendent. Violation of these conditions is prohibited (36CFR §2.13(b)).

2. It is illegal to smoke except within the designated Brandy Creek Marina parking lot, Brandy Creek Beach parking lots A & B, East Beach parking lot, Whiskey Creek Group Picnic Site parking lot, Whiskey Creek Boat Ramp parking lot, Oak Bottom Campground and Marina parking lots, Carr Power House parking area, Park Headquarters Maintenance Yard and the Visitor Center parking lot on Kennedy Memorial Drive (36 CFR §2.21 (a)).

3. It is illegal to possess or discharge any fireworks on all park lands (36 CFR §2.38 (b)).

4. The discharge of firearms is prohibited within the park (depending on fire danger levels this restriction may extend into California’s regular hunting season).

Pursuant to Title 36 CFR §1.6 (a), the following persons are exempt from this order:

1. Persons with a special use permit, specifically authorizing the otherwise prohibited act.
