Whiskeytown National Recreation Area invites children and their parents or guardians to join park rangers for a pleasant hike to Whiskeytown Falls on Saturday, October 8, 2011. The hike will celebrate the wonderful summer experience, which is drawing toward a season's closure. The "Children's End of Summer Hike" promotes healthy physical activity and will help children and their adult companions to get out into nature. In addition, this will be the 50th hike to Whiskeytown Falls for one local 5th grader. The student completed his 49th hike to the falls in early August. National Park Service Rangers would like to have 50 children and their parents join them to celebrate this achievement.

Each child who wishes to participate is asked to write a short essay about the highlights of his or her summer experiences at Whiskeytown. All stories will be collected and placed into a special binder that will be displayed at the park's visitor center for the public to enjoy. The writer of the winning essay will receive a gift certificate to a local ice cream shop. Children must write the stories out prior to the hike, and every child who submits a story must hike to the fall's register box where they can sign their name and comment on the hike. Each child who completes the hike will receive a special bandana that states, "I hiked to the Falls." In addition, rangers will be on hand with art supplies for visitors to create artistic expressions of their experience.

Hike participants are asked to meet at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 8. Carpools from the visitor center to the James K. Carr trailhead on Crystal Creek Road are encouraged as parking is limited. To sign up for the "Children's End of Summer Hike to Whiskeytown Falls," please call (530) 242-3410.
