The Davis Gulch Trail at Whiskeytown, closed on March 2nd due to a mountain lion sighting, has been re-opened. Park Rangers have been patrolling and monitoring the trail and have found no evidence of further mountain lion activity along the trail. Rangers will continue patrols of the trail.

Mountain lions are a natural part of the ecosystem and are common at Whiskeytown, with the most recent sighting occurring earlier this week on Clear Creek Vista trail near Carr Powerhouse. As always, hikers, runners and families with children need to keep an eye out for mountain lions, take appropriate action if they do encounter a mountain lion, and report sightings to the visitor center or to a park ranger.

For additional information about mountain lions and other wildlife at Whiskeytown, stop by the visitor center or visit our website at https://www.nps.gov/whis/planyourvisit/yoursafety.htm

Spring is a great time to visit Whiskeytown and hike the trails, with wildflowers already in bloom including the Jeffrey Shooting Star, Redbud, Indian Warrior, and Manzanita. Visitors may also enjoy watching for a wide variety of migrating birds, along with many returning residents including at least three pairs of nesting Bald Eagles.
