Whiskeytown National Recreation Area is pleased to announce that a draft Interim Site Management Plan and Environmental Assessment for the Tower House Historic District is now available for public review. The environmental assessment uses information gathered over the past year from public meetings, as well as from park staff and cultural resource specialists. The park is proposing to rehabilitate the Camden House and adjacent outbuildings for adaptive re-use to support special events held in the historic district. This would provide an opportunity for a larger number of visitors to experience the Camden House, while still preserving and protecting the cultural resources of the district. A staging area for the non-motorized use of the Shasta-Trinity trail system is also proposed on the north bank of Clear Creek off Trinity Mountain Road near the Highway 299 intersection. The staging area would be composed of eight to ten parking spaces for automobiles, nine parking spaces for horse trailers, a picnic area, information kiosk and vault toilet. A trail through the historic district connecting the staging area to the Mill Creek trail would eventually be built. In addition to the preferred alternative, two other alternatives are being considered. Under the Cultural Interpretation Emphasis alternative the buildings and historic landscape of the district would be rehabilitated to restore the character of the historic scene and showcase the district’s California Gold Rush Heritage. The No-Action alternative would continue existing management practices in the district. The public is encouraged to read and comment on this plan and environmental assessment during the 30-day review period ending May 28, 2007.
