President’s Park is sad to report that long time volunteer, Sara E. Goodwin, passed away on Thursday, August 6, 2009. She was 65 years old. Sara was a volunteer with President's Park since 1996.

“Saturday Sara” as she was affectionately known in President’s Park, was deeply committed to serving visitors at President's Park. She found so many ways to do this whether it was staffing the park’s information kiosk, greeting visitors, handling out White House tour tickets, assisting with special events such as the Lighting of the National Christmas Tree, White House Garden Tours, White House Easter Egg Roll, or Presidential Inaugurations.

Ms. Goodwin was born in Columbia, South Carolina, and was retired as an environmental engineer with the U.S. Corps of Engineers. She had taught adult literacy program. Sara enjoyed Tournament Bridge, and was an avid gardener and bird-watcher.

She was the beloved mother of John F. Biskup, Ridgecrest, California. Ms. Goodwin is survived by her loving brothers and sister, Jack Goodwin, (wife Kay), Port Washington, Wisconsin; Marshall Goodwin (wife Joyce), Oregon City Oregon, and Fran Miller (husband Don), Murray, Kentucky. She was also the beloved aunt of eight nieces and nephews and 13 great-nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and her son, Kenneth Dale Fitzner.

Funeral arrangements are being provided by Funeral Choices. A private family memorial is planned.

President’s Park is saddened by the loss of someone who did so much to serve the mission of the National Park Service.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that a donation be made in Sara's memory to the charity of your choice.
