Wheeling National Heritage Area

The Wheeling National Heritage Area celebrates the city’s dramatic setting along the Ohio River, providing experiences in Victorian architecture, waterfront park development, historic city markets, renovated industrial buildings featuring retail shops, restaurants and interpretive exhibits, and West Virginia Independence Hall, the birthplace of the state of West Virginia during the Civil War.

The Wheeling Suspension Bridge

The Wheeling Suspension Bridge, once the longest bridge in the world, was the first bridge to span the Ohio River. Opened in 1849, the bridge remains the oldest vehicular suspension bridge in the USA. The visitor can walk across the historic span, view the Ohio River, witness barge traffic and look down on Wheeling Heritage Port. Built by Charles Ellet, Jr., the bridge is listed as a National Historic Landmark, a Historic Civil Engineering Landmark, and is listed with the International Council of Monuments and Sites.

The Wheeling Artisan Center is a renovated industrial building with a three-story atrium in the heart of downtown Wheeling and a tribute to the city’s rich cultural heritage. It includes a unique Retail Emporium where visitors can shop for WV and regional handcrafted art, interactive, walk-thru exhibits highlighting Wheeling’s rich industrial heritage, a 3rd floor Loft Gallery which features changing art exhibits, and River City Restaurant which is one of Wheeling’s finer restaurants and meeting places.

The historic Centre Market neighborhood has many points of interest to make for an enjoyable day trip. Thousands of Confederate soldiers who died in Richmond’s hospitals or in the battles around the city are buried at either Hollywood or Oakwood cemeteries. Most of the Union dead are buried in one of five National Cemeteries: Richmond, Cold Harbor, Seven Pines, Glendale or Fort Harrison.
