Saturday, April 20 marks the beginning of National Park Week - our nation's annual celebration of its magnificent natural landscapes and diverse cultural heritage. This year, from April 20-28, YOU are invited to get to know your national parks, and from April 22-26, the national parks waive all entrance fees. Whether it is your first trip or the latest of many memorable park experiences, there's no better time to get out and explore America's special places! And remember, at Weir Farm National Historic Site, admission and programs are free.
This spring, Weir Farm National Historic Site, the only national park in the country dedicated to American painting, joins in the celebration by offering a wide variety of programs and activities for adults, families, and children, including the debut of the stunning new Painting Sites Guide.
Painting Sites Guide
Stop by the visitor center, pick up a Painting Sites Guide, and walk in the footsteps of great American artists past and present while viewing thirty-eight of the park's painting site locations on a self-guided tour of the landscape. With the Painting Sites Guide, you will be able to view, step into, and become part of these iconic paintings by American masters like Julian Alden Weir, the father of American Impressionism. The art-filled guide includes historic artwork as well as pieces by contemporary artists who keep the artistic tradition alive, vibrant, and relevant today.
Take Part in Art
From 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday, be creative, be inspired, and Take Part in Art as artists have at Weir Farm National Historic Site for over 130 years! Discover your inner artist while sketching en plein air with graphite pencils, colored pencils, or chalk pastels provided by the National Park Service free of charge. All ages and experience levels are encouraged to participate.
Junior Ranger Day
On Saturday, April 20 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Weir Farm National Historic Site celebrates Junior Ranger Day! Children (and adults young at heart) are encouraged to explore the park, engage in a variety of activities, and earn their Junior Ranger Badge and Patch. Two activities will be available - the Junior Ranger Letterboxing Booklet and the Junior Ranger Pond Pack.
The Junior Ranger Letterboxing Booklet is filled with guided clues that children use to navigate the landscape and locate stamps in hidden locations. Five containers, or letterboxes, have been hidden at various locations throughout the park.
For those looking for a nature walk, the park offers the Junior Ranger Pond Pack, a backpack containing art and nature-oriented activities to complete on a hike around Weir Pond. There is no fee to participate in the Junior Ranger Program.
