Contact: Dan Brown, 671-333-4051 Park Programs October 2014Join park rangers this month for a variety of fun and interesting interpretive programs. Park rangers will lead special guided tours of park sites and share personal stories of those who fought in the Pacific War. Programs provide visitors an opportunity to learn about park resources, the people we honor, and how events of the past still influence us today. For specific program details, please see the attached schedule of events. All events are free and open to the public. Most programs occur outdoors at different locations and vary in length from thirty minutes to one hour. Most hikes are moderate and short but traverse slippery and steep terrain, so wear appropriate footwear and attire. Visitors are encouraged to bring water, umbrellas, and insect repellant. The Impact of Chuuk Saturdays, 2 pm, except October 18 The island-hopping campaign across the Pacific brought new challenges, yet large pay-off, for the Americans. Join a ranger at Ga'an Point to explore the devastation of Chuuk, a single step in the march to Japan, but to its Micronesian residents, the only world they'd ever known. Free; 30 minutes Guns Hike Sundays, 2 pm, except October 05 Meet at the Veterans Cemetery on Route 6 and we'll caravan to the short hiking trail that leads to three large coastal defense guns in Piti. Although these are the only guns in their original positions protected by the park, we'll discover another reason why they are particularly unique. Free; 1 hour Additional Special Events at the T. Stell Newman Visitor Center Curator’s Corner Saturday, October 18, at 1 pm Do you have a relative who served with the Guam Insular Force Guard? How about the Guam Combat Patrol? Join the park curator for a presentation of the broad sweep of Guam’s militias from 1771-1948. Artifacts from the park collection will be available to observe and touch. Free; 2 hours Science Sunday Sunday, October 05, at 2 pm This series of programs features guest speakers who help make the science all around us applicable and fun. This month, learn about the research vessel Falkor that will be in the Marianas this fall and the fascinating work it’s doing around the Marianas Trench. Free; 1 hour |
