Join park rangers this month for a variety of fun and interesting interpretive programs. Park Rangers will show movies, lead special guided tours of park sites and share personal stories of those who fought in the Pacific War. Programs provide visitors an opportunity to learn about park resources, the people we honor, and how events of the past still influence us today. The public also has the chance to volunteer in planting projects, clean-ups, and other opportunities. For specific program details, please see the attached schedule of events.
All events are free and open to the public. Most programs occur outdoors at different locations and vary in length from thirty minutes to three hours. Hikes are moderate and short but traverse slippery and steep terrain, so wear appropriate footwear and attire. Visitors are encouraged to bring water, umbrellas, and insect repellant. In the event of inclement weather, programs may be delayed or cancelled. For more information or questions on specific programs, call 671-333-4050.
SCHEDULE OF EVENTS FOR THE MONTH OF SEPTEMBER
Every day in September - Battle for the Aleutians: learn about this forgotten chapter of World War II in a special exhibit on display at the T. Stell Newman Visitor Center. The visitor center is located in Sumay in front of the Naval Station main gate and open daily 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Saturday, September 3 - 2 p.m. at Asan Beach - "Laws change; people die; the land remains." Meet at the restrooms and explore the history of Asan Ridge. (45 minutes)
Sunday, September 4 - 2 p.m. at Asan Beach - "Sailor's Story" - Join us for a look at pre-war Guam and the story of how Frank, a young U.S. Naval officer, became caught up in a tragedy he never could have expected. (30 minutes)
Saturday, September 10 - 2 p.m. at Apaca Point - "Death Before Dishonor" - Discover hidden fortifications along the Agat beach and learn about the Japanese struggle to defend Guam. (30 minutes)
Sunday, September 11 - 10 a.m. at Asan Beach - Wounded Warrior Ride Kick-off.
Join us and the Guam Harley Owners Group in honoring our nation's wounded veterans. The ride begins with a commemorative ceremony at Asan Beach.
--------- 2 p.m. at Piti Guns - Meet at the Veterans Cemetery on Route 6 and we'll drive to the hiking trail that leads to three large Japanese coastal defense guns. (45 minutes)
Saturday, September 17 - 7 a.m. at Asan Beach - Take pride in your island! Join volunteers from across the globe for the 26th annual International Coastal Cleanup.
-------- 1 p.m. at Visitor Center - Join our museum curator for a display of artifacts and a presentation on the horrific and costly 1944 Battle of Peleliu. (Two hours)
-------- 6:30 p.m. at Asan Beach - Movie in the Park! As part of the International Coastal Cleanup activities, park rangers will present an environmental movie on the big screen under the stars. Bring family, a blanket, an umbrella, and maybe some mosquito repellent. (90 minutes)
Sunday, September 18 - 2 p.m. at Asan Bay Overlook - "Soldier's Story" - Hear the story of one of Guam's sons, his World War II experience, and his harrowing return during the Battle of Guam. Did he really find what he was looking for? (30 minutes)
Saturday, September 24 - National Public Lands Day - We are excited to host multiple volunteer activities for those interested in contributing to your national park! Please call 333-4050 for more information on this day's events and how you can get involved.
Sunday, September 25 - 2 p.m. at Ga'an Point - "We fought for Guam" - Listen to the story of the brave men who experienced World War II as part of the 77th Army Infantry Division. (30 minutes)
