On Saturday, August 30th, Washita Battlefield National Historic Site's Living History group, "Troop J," traveled to Larned, Kansas to take part in Fort Larned National Historical Site's 50th anniversary celebration as a National Park Service site. Fort Larned was an important military post along the Santa Fe Trail from 1859 to 1878, and played a key role in the Indian Wars of the 1860s. Today, it is the best preserved Indian Wars military post on the Santa Fe Trail. Shown on the steps of the Post Commander's House are Troop J members (left to right): Loren Smith, Scott Martin, Joel Shockley (front step), Mike Mapel, and Vic McCalley.
