A beautiful morning at NPS Photo On August 25, 2007 Washita Battlefield National Historic Site staff opened the doors to the new visitor center to the public. Currently our new headquarters feature exhibits depicting the clash of cultures that laid the foundation for the attack along the Washita River. As Lt. Col. George Armstrong Custer and his men rode towards Black Kettle's camp they endured four days of blizzard conditions. Several troops were affected by the inclement weather including field surgeons Henry Lippincott and William Renicke both of whom were stricken with snow blindness.
