Washita Battlefield National Historic Site Holiday Schedule
With the holiday season upon us, the staff at Washita Battlefield National Historic Site would like to thank the public for their support in 2009 and wish everyone a happy holiday. We invite everyone to visit our visitor center which includes a park film, an exhibit area, and a bookstore. Park Rangers are available to provide information and tours.
The visitor center will be closed on Friday, December 25th and Friday, January 1st, 2010.
“This has been a memorable year at Washita Battlefield NHS,” said park superintendent, Lisa Conard Frost, “I look back on many memories from my first year here at Washita - Michael Blake speaking at the Cheyenne High School Auditorium, Paul Hutton’s observations about the history of this very important part of western Oklahoma, and most recently the Day of Remembrance and Reflection which was the 141st anniversary of the engagement, thank you all for your continued support of your National Park!
Did You Know?
Camp Supply, Indian Territory, was established November 1868, to support General Philip Sheridan's winter campaign against the Southern Plains Indians. Lt. Col. George Armstrong Custer and the 7th U.S. Cavalry left this camp to search for and engage "hostiles" reported to be in their winter camps along the Washita River. This historic post is located 13 miles north of Woodward, Oklahoma on Highway 183.
