Washita Battlefield National Historic Site visitor center will be closed on Christmas Day, December 25 and on Friday, December 26. President Bush has issued an executive order declaring December 26 a holiday for federal workers. So, plan ahead and do your holiday shopping in the visitor center bookstore by Wednesday, December 24! The Western National Parks Association bookstore has outstanding gifts and stocking stuffers for the Christmas season.
The park visitor center will re-open on Saturday, December 27. The visitor center will be closed again on January 1, 2009, re-opening on January 2.
The park staff wishes to thank the community for its wonderful support during the 140th Anniversary of the Washita events on December 4, 5, and 6. During these three days more than 500 students and visitors attended the programs.

Washita Battlefield National Historic Site was established to protect, and interpret the site where at dawn on November 27, 1868 the Southern Cheyenne village led by Peace Chief Black Kettle was attacked by the 7th U.S. Cavalry under the command of Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer.
