On Tuesday, February 9 at 6:30 p.m., Park Ranger Joel Shockley will lead Washita Battlefield's Book Club discussion on Nevada Barr's Ill Wind at the Minnie R. Slief Library. Nevada Barr, a former Law Enforcement Park Ranger for the National Park Service, has taken true events within National Parks and twisted them into suspenseful mysteries.

In Ill Wind, Nevada Barr's heroine, Park Ranger Anna Pigeon, is stationed at Mesa Verde National Park, guarding the ancient Anasazi cliff dwellings. Anna is investigating two mysterious tragedies at the park: the death of a child and the murder of her friend. Anna must find the very human source of the "ill wind" that seems to be blowing through these ruins. Ranger Shockley worked at Mesa Verde National Park in 2003 and will add his insight to the discussion.

Ill Wind will also be discussed by Park Ranger Barbara Ford on February 25, 2016 at 6:30 p.m. at the Elk City Carnegie Library.

On behalf of the Western National Parks Association, the cooperating association that operates the park store at Washita Battlefield National Historic Site, both Rangers will sell copies of the next book club selection The Worst Hard Time by Timothy Egan. Discussions for the book will be May 16 at the Minnie R. Slief Library and May 5, 2016 at the Elk City Carnegie Library. The third book for 2016 is Empire of the Summer Moon by S.C. Gwynne, with the discussion on August 1 in Cheyenne and August 4 in Elk City. The last book club discussion in 2016 is The High Divide by Lin Enger on November 14 in Cheyenne and November 3 in Elk City. All books may be purchased that the park.
