You may register for this event at http://voyageurs.org/event/august25npsbirthday/ The NPS was established by congress on August 25, 1916 to provide a managing agency for the over 30 existing park areas at that time including Yellowstone NP, Yosemite, NP, and Devils Tower NM. This legislation, The Organic Act, stated the NPS must manage these areas "to conserve the scenery and the natural and historic objects and the wild life therein and to provide for the enjoyment of the same in such manner and by such means as will leave them unimpaired for the enjoyment of future generations." This mission has continued to this day. On April 8, 1975, congress established Voyageurs National Park as the nation's 36th national park to preserve the outstanding scenery, geologic conditions, and historic waterways of the area. This year marks the park's 40th birthday. The event is sponsored by Voyageurs National Park Association. Their mission is to protect and promote the natural, recreational, and historic resources of Voyageurs. Learn more at voyageurs.org. Check the park's website at https://www.nps.gov/voya to discover more summer and fall events celebrating these birthdays. |
