Permits

Permits are required for Blue Runner fishing in the Monument south of St. John, and bait fishing in Hurricane Hole. A permit is also needed for boaters who wish to utilized hurricane moorings in Hurricane Hole during an approaching storm.

Fishermen wishing to fish must first obtain a permit from the Chief Law Enforcement Ranger’s office located at the Visitor Center in Cruz Bay.

Boaters wishing to utilize the moorings in Hurricane Hole as a safe haven during the threat of an oncoming storm are required to obtain a permit from the Resource Management Office during early June of each year (look for news release announcing the time and dates for receiving permits).

In 2001, scientists taking a plant inventory in Biscayne National Park discovered a population of semaphore pricklypear cactus, one of the world's rarest plants. Previously known as only 9 plants in the lower Florida Keys, the new population numbered 570 plants...over 60 times the previous count.
