Stockade Redan was constructed to protect the Graveyard Road approach to
Vicksburg. The stockade was given its name because of a stockade or wall of poplar logs
was built across the Graveyard Road. The redan was attacked twice, on May 19th and
22nd, and
each time the garrison successfully repulsed the Federal soldiers.
Imagine being a confederate soldier behind the earthworks
attempting to shoot the attacking Federals, while Union artillery fire and sharpshooters
try to pin you down.
It was after the failure of the May 22 assault that Grant decided to
conduct siege operations. Confederate brig. Gen. Martin E. Green was killed near this spot
by a Union sharpshooter. Moments before he had shrugged off warnings from his soldiers by
saying, "a bullet has not yet been molded that will kill me".
