On Saturday, July 20, 2013, Vicksburg National Military Park Ranger Kerry Jones will present a program on Kentucky's 'Orphan Brigade' from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm at the Warren County Public Library located at 200 Veto Street, in Vicksburg. Admission is free.

The Orphan Brigade was a group of military units recruited by the South during the Civil War from the border state of Kentucky. It was the largest Confederate unit organized from the state, and its original commander was Major General John C. Breckinridge, former Vice President of the United States, and later Secretary of War of the Confederate States of America. The brigade played a role helping to create the defenses of Vicksburg in June 1862, and was later ordered to the relief of Vicksburg in May 1863. Several commanders of the unit were instrumental in the defense of Vicksburg during the Campaign and Siege, including Brig. Gen. Lloyd Tilghman and Brig. Gen. Benjamin Hardin Helm.

This presentation is part of Vicksburg National Military Park's Sesquicentennial outreach effort, 'Along the Campaign Trail,' which includes programs conducted by a dedicated team of interpreters during a year-long effort to bring the story of the Campaign and Siege of Vicksburg to schools, libraries, museums, and civic organizations throughout the region.
