8th Illinois Infantry

 

Monument is located on Union Avenue 200 yards south of Jackson Road. Markers are also located 500' southeast of the Louisiana Memorial, designating the assault of 22 May 1863 and a sharpshooter's marker is located 500' southeast of the Louisiana Memorial. This unit was attached to Brig. Gen. John D. Stevenson's 3rd Brigade of Maj. Gen. John A. Logan's 3rd Division of Maj. Gen. James B. McPherson's XVII Army Corps and was commanded by Col. John P. Post & Col. Robert H. Sturgess. At Port Gibson on 1 May 1863 the regiment lost 1 officer (Capt. Frank Leeper) & 7 enlisted KIA, 1 officer & 18 enlisted WIA totaling 27 casualties. At Champion Hill on 16 May 1863 the regiment, in connection with 32nd Ohio Infantry, claimed the capture of 5 guns at the point of the bayonet and lost 2 enlisted KIA, 1 officer & 6 enlisted WIA, and 3 enlisted MIA for a total of 12 casualties. In the assault of the Vicksburg defenses, 22 May 1863, the regiment suffered 4 enlisted KIA and 1 officer & 18 enlisted WIA for a total of 23 casualties.
