Bakers Creek

The Champion Hill Road was one of two avenues of escape open to Pemberton's army. Early in the afternoon of May 16, 1863, Union battlelines extended beyond the Confederate left flank, and threatened to seize their position. A Southern counterthrust failed, and by mid-afternoon the escape route was closed, leaving the Confederates only the Raymond Road crossing of Bakers Creek to make good their escape.
