Multiple monument located at Louisiana Circle on South Washington Street. This unit was attached to Col. Edward Higgins' River Defense Batteries, Lt. Gen. John C. Pemberton's Army of Vicksburg, and commanded by Maj. Frederick N. Ogden. [Refer to pages 26, 28, and 29, Volume 1 of the WPA Monumentation Book, and to Edwin Bearss' The Vicksburg Campaign, Volume I, page 226; Volume II, page 63; and Volume III, pages 873 and 968.]

Company F

This unit was attached to the "Whig Office Battery" and commanded by Capt. T. N. McCrory. The "Whig Office Battery" was near the old steamboat landing and mounted one 10-inch Columbiad gun and one 32-pdr smoothbore gun. [Refer to Edwin Bearss' The Vicksburg Campaign, Volume II, page 63.]

Did You Know?

Thomas O. Selfridge

Thomas O. Selfridge, captain of the USS Cairo, commanded three boats which sank during the war. Each began with the letter "C"-Cumberland, Cairo, and Conestoga. The coincidence was noted after the Conestoga sank, and Selfridge was assigned to the USS Osage, which survived to the end of the war.
