  • Union Avenue Road Closure - Tuesday, September 16, 2014

    Union Avenue will be closed to all activities (walking, biking, jogging, and vehicle tours) between the Memorial Arch and Pemberton Avenue beginning at 6:30 a.m., and remained closed until hazardous tree removal work in the area is completed.

Listed on the North Carolina State Memorial. This unit was attached to This unit was attached to Brig. Gen. Marcellus A. Stovall's Brigade of Maj. Gen'l John C. Breckinridge's Division, Gen. Joseph E. Johnston's Army of Relief, Department of the West and was commanded by Col. Wash M. Hardy. The regiment arrive in Jackson, MS on 1 June 1863 and on 4 July 1863 was headquartered at Bolton. Thomas O. Selfridge

Thomas O. Selfridge, captain of the USS Cairo, commanded three boats which sank during the war. Each began with the letter "C"-Cumberland, Cairo, and Conestoga. The coincidence was noted after the Conestoga sank, and Selfridge was assigned to the USS Osage, which survived to the end of the war.
