    The Illinois Monument and immediate area will be closed to all visitors and tour traffic beginning at 8:00 a.m. and remain closed until contractors and lift equipment operators complete necessary measurements required for bat exclusion project work.

This unit was attached to Maj. A.H. Chalmers' 18th Battalion Mississippi Cavalry, of Brig. Gen. James R. Chalmers' 5th Military District (headquartered at Panola, MS), Gen. Joseph E. Johnston's Department of the West, and commanded by J. W. Smith. Originally Smith's Mississippi Partisan Rangers, this organization was re-designated as Co. D, 18th Battalion Mississippi Cavalry State Troops. [Refer to Edwin Bearss' The Vicksburg Campaign, Volume I, page 594; Volume II, page 249; and Volume III, page 1144.]

Old Douglas Headstone, Cedar Hill Cemetery

The 43d Mississippi Infantry's mascot, Douglas the Camel, remained with the regiment until Vicksburg where he was killed by Union sharpshooters. Douglas is honored with his own grave marker in Vicksburg's Cedar Hill Cemetery.
