Enter a fun run! Join a Park Ranger for a hike! Attend a Shape Up Vicksburg event. Our community has many fun, active events that you can be part of. It's a great way to meet new friends, see new places and learn new things! Earn one stamp for each event you attend.

Below are a list of upcoming events where you can earn a stamp for your Shape Up, Junior Ranger Logbook:

Event: "Owl Discovery Walk" Shape Up Junior Ranger Event and Walk
Where: Meet at the Old Superintendent's House on Pemberton Ave. inside Vicksburg National Military Park.
What: Whoo-whooo's in the park after dark?Shape Up, Junior Rangers, that's who! Take a 1-mile Owl Discovery Walk to learn more about owls and other creatures of the night that call the Vicksburg National Military Park home. After the walk, we'll have a hands-on learning experience all about owls and the special skills that make them a top nighttime predator! Participants should wear comfortable shoes and insect repellant. Participants are also invited to wear their favorite 'spooky' (or not-so-spooky) holiday costume, but please, make sure your vision is unrestricted and you are comfortable walking one mile. Space on this walk is limited. To make reservations please call 601-636-8715.

Event: Walk of Honor
Where: Parade line-up starts on Belmont Street in Vicksburg, MS - look for the Junior Ranger sign!
What: Shape Up Junior Rangers will help honor our Veterans by marching in the Vicksburg Veterans Day Parade! Join the rest of our Junior Ranger friends and partners at Shape Up Vicksburg by marching (1/2 mile) in this community event. The walk is down hill at a moderate pace. Participants are encouraged to wear comfortable shoes and clothing. All Junior Rangers participating will get a special award! View the event flyer here.

After the event join Vicksburg National Military Park and other community organizations at the Vicksburg Convention Center for presentations and programs in honor of our nation's veterans!

Did You Know?

Thomas O. Selfridge

Thomas O. Selfridge, captain of the USS Cairo, commanded three boats which sank during the war. Each began with the letter "C"-Cumberland, Cairo, and Conestoga. The coincidence was noted after the Conestoga sank, and Selfridge was assigned to the USS Osage, which survived to the end of the war.
