Bush's Ford, located 11.7 airline
miles northeast of present-day Bovina, was a relatively well-used crossing
of the Big Black River in 1863. The ford provided a convenient alternate
route between Oak Ridge (on the Benton Road, 6.5 miles to the east)
and Brownsville (on the Brownsville Road, 9.7 miles to the east). Thus,
it provided an alternative to the use of Birdsong's Ferry to travel
from Brownsville to northeast approaches to Vicksburg.
