On June 29, 1863, Union Maj. Gen. William T. Sherman moved Brig. Gen. John McArthur's provisional division forward to Tiffentown with orders to fortify a line that extended from a point south of Parson Fox's Farm to Bryant's Plantation (13.7 airline miles east-northeast of the Old Court Hoouse in Vicksburg), about 1.5 miles north of the former. At this point, the fortified line was continued to the north with an almost-complete line of earthworks to Oak Ridge, 5 airline miles to the northeast on the Benton Road (present-day Oak Ridge Road).
