About noon on April 30, 1863, a fleet
of ten Union transports , carrying infantry from Maj. Gen. Francis Blair's
division (Maj. Gen. Wiliam T. Sherman's XV Corps) began landing troops
at Blake's Lower Plantation (on the Valley Road [present-day Washington
Street] 4.9 airline miles north-northeaast of the Old Court House in
Vicksburg), and the regiments began moving east toward the base of Drumgould's
Bluff. Hebert opened fire as soon as they came within range of his artillery.
The Union advance stopped, after which the Federals rapidly withdrew
to the Yazoo River and re-boarded their vessels.
