Union Brig. Gen. W.P. Benton's brigade (Brig. Gen. A.E. Carr's division of Maj. Gen. John A. McClernand's XIII Corps) established an artillery battery at this point (about 2 miles east of Edwards) about 7:00 p.m. on May 16, 1863, and attempted to interdict a Confederate column marching along the Raymond road, about 1,000 yards to the southwest. However, the artillery fire had no perceptible effect, so Benton withdrew north toward the Jackson road, about 1,200 yards to the north.
