Union
Maj. Gen. John A. McClernand, with Brig. Gen. Peter Osterhaus' division
and Brig. Gen. Alvin Hovey's division, crossed Bakers Creek en route
to Dillon's Farm and Raymond about mid-morning on May 13, 1863. They
were forced to ford the stream, the bridge having been washed out by
a flash flood several weeks earlier.
About
mid-morning on May 13 a patrol of Confederate Col. Wirt Adams' Mississippi
Cavalry Regiment overtook the rear guard of Union Maj. Gen. Alvin Hovey's
division at this point. The Union rear guard forced the Confederat cavalry
to withdraw, and contact between the froces was broken.
