The advance guard of Confederate Lt.
Gen. John C. Pemberton's Army of Vicksburg reached this point about
1:30 p.m. on May 15, 1863, at which time it was discovered that the
lower Baker's Creek Bridge, by which the Raymond Road crossed Baker's
Creek, was washed out, and the stream flooded and unfordable. The Army
of Vicksburg started up this road toward the Upper Baker's Creek Bridge,
which carried the Jackson road across Baker's Creek, at about 3:00 p.m.,
it having taken considerable time for scouts to establish that the road
actually went all the way to the Jackson road, about 2 miles to the
northeast.
