Anthony's
Ferry, which crossed the Yazoo River just to the south of present-day
Mississippi 465 and just upstream from the modern railroad bridge, connected
the Valley Road (which connected Vicksburg and Yazoo City) with a good
road that extended up the west bank of Deer Creek (present-day Floweree
Road). This road continued north through Rolling Fork to as far as present-day
Leland and Metcalfe, about 63 airline miles north of the ferry. Deer
Creek was lined with righ agricultural establishments, and was one of
the ost productive areas in the Mississippi Delta. Agricultural products
form the Deer Creek region comprised a major source of supplies for
the Confederate Army of Vicksburg before May 18, 1863, 2hen the supplies
were cut off by the arrival of Union Maj. Gen. Ulysses s. Grant's Army
north of Vicksburg.
